The Interview
This is INSANE.
I can't believe this is actually happening. Since when were we scared of North Korea? Since when was our reaction to their threats anything but a heart national LOL?
My gut says that this story can't be real but I can't find any evidence it isn't it's being carried everywhere and the film's Wikipedia page reflects it too.

Dead State
Anybody heard of this dialogue heavy Walking Dead influenced Fallout-like indie RPG? I spotted it on GOG today, I don't know anything about it. Seems rather up my alley, but $29.99 is a bit steep as a barrier to entry for me when a game doesn't have AAA pedigree/sure thing value.
Looks interesting, though. (Definitely not unlike the kind of shit I like to think I'd be making if I was a 'real' videogame dev.)
Minimizing Mapping: An Abstract Exercise In Game Design
Disclaimer: While I describe this as an 'abstract exercise' I am obviously confining my thinking within the constraints of the locus of the RPGMaker program family.
So I'm looking to generate some ideas here with an abstract intellectual exercise in game design.
1) Pretend that like me you hate mapping and want to do as little of it as possible. Also, you want to make a decent sized game.
2) Also pretend that for whatever reason you don't want to make a game that's a visual-novel hybrid and doesn't have any maps at all, a la Essence Enforcer by LouisCyphre. (As a random shout out, I'd go ahead and recommend that game to any of you who haven't played it.) Obviously "solutions" like making a game with no graphics at all are also right out.
I'm not gonna put any more hypothetical constraints in play because two is probably enough to get people brainstorming without restricting too much.
So how do you design a decent-sized game to use the smallest amount of maps possible without being boring to play or boring to develop? How do you milk the most gameplay and/or story possible out of the smallest number of maps possible? Tell me as much about these hypothetical game designs as you can think of.

Out Of Control Cops - A Serious Problem In America
Cops in America are beating, torturing, and killing people without repercussions. The officers responsible for killing American citizens--including the elderly and children--have often not even been indicted for a crime. Many of the victims--a truly disproportionate amount--have been minorities. But even in cases where the victims were not minorities, the officers involved were often not even indicted. In the cases where the victims were minorities, a vile narrative has emerged from the political right--the traditional "no matter what" defenders of the boys in blue--portraying the victims as "thugs" who deserved it.
Deputy Who Choked Student Gets To Retire, Won’t Face Charges
Here are some of the "highlights" from this unbelievable parade of sickening injustice after sickening injustice. I feel bad even putting them in a list, because each one is a tragedy, and because of that old Stalin quote about how tragedies, when sufficiently quantized, become statistics. But the thing is...the fact that there isn't just one or two really reflects the seriousness of the problem. As does the geographical distribution of the problem. This shit is happening EVERYWHERE.
I have to stop there because if I can't leave off with "COP THROWS GRENADE AT ACTUAL BABY, WALKS AWAY SCOTT FREE" I don't know if I'll ever be able to stop.
Except where otherwise indicated, all victims were African American. Some of these things were racially motivated violence or just awful, sadistic acts of cruelty by the people who are supposed to SERVE AND PROTECT us. Others were clearly accidents. But in all cases there is one unifying thread...a TOTAL lack of appropriate accountability and consequences for destroying human lives.
I. Feel. Sick.
What has lead to the complete impunity with which police officers murder American citizens? And what can be done to stop it?

- Kimani Gray - 16 Years Old. Shot four times in the front and side of his body and three times in the back by two NYPD officers as he left a friend's birthday party in Brooklyn on March 9, 2013. The pigs responsible faced no criminal charges.
- Kelly Thomas - 37 Years Old. Homeless. Schizophrenic. White. Tazed, tortured, and beaten to death by a gang of Fullerton California police officers. He cried and screamed for his father as they were torturing him to death. This is what was left of him when the pigs were done having their fun.
Warning: EXTREMELY GRAPHIC!!!
Officers were actually charged this time, with second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and excessive force. All of the pigs charged plead non-guilty. All of the pigs charged were found not guilty: charges were not even pursued against the third pig, based on that.
- Victor Steen - 17 Years Old. Riding his bicycle when he was drive-by tasered and then run over along with his bicycle by a cop car in Pensacola, Florida. The link above is a video from the patrol car camera where you can actually watch this happen. The judge ruled that no crime had been commited.
- Tamir Rice - 12 Years Old. Playing with a realistic looking airsoft gun in a public park when he was shot to death by police. For those who might suggest race was not a factor here, I personally have been playing with realistic looking airsoft guns in public parks with all of my friends AS AN ADULT every weekend for five years now. Neither I nor any of my friends have been shot. Most of us are white. And none of us, thank God, were in Cleveland. It remains to be seen whether the pigs in question will be charged. Anything is possible.
- Aiyana Jones - 7 Year Old Girl. Shot and killed as she slept in her home. The pig who shot her walked free of a misdemeanor charge for her death.
- John Crawford - 20 Years Old. Murdered by police in an Ohio Wal-Mart because he was carrying a toy gun. A grand jury refused to indict the pigs who murdered him.
- Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. - 68 Year Old USMC Veteran. Murdered in his home while it was being forcibly entered by racist White Plains, NY Police Department officers. Wearing nothing but boxer shorts, unarmed, with his hands at his sides, he was tasered twice by police, then shot twice at point blank range with a shotgun loaded with beanbag rounds, then finished off with a 9mm Glock. I have seen the 20 minute long video recording of the taser-cam leading up to his death. In his last moment after being tased the hardass and mentally ill old Marine screamed at the officers to shoot him some more. Clearly, they thought it would be best to oblige. The pigs who murdered him were not charged because a grand jury minutes from my home town refused to indict.
- Dymond Milburn. A 12 year old girl. Kidnapped, thrown in a van, and severely beaten by cops that said she was a prostitute. I'm not sure if the officers were ever charged but SHE was subsequently arrested and tried for resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer. Making this child beating pig kidnapper--who I'm going to guess is also at least an attempted child rapist too--the biggest pussy ass coward in the history of pigs. He pressed charges on a 12 year old girl for assault. So in addition to being a horrifying monster acting under color of law...he is also obviously a little bitch.
- Eric Garner - 44. Suffocated to death by multiple NYPD officers for the crime of selling loose cigarettes. The pigs responsible were not indicted by a grand jury.
- Cassandra Feurstein - 47. White. A pig shoved her face first into a concrete bench in a jail cell because he was pissed off. Her face was shattered and had to be reconstructed with a titanium plate. The entire incident was caught on tape. The pig in question plead down to official misconduct, and was charged with probation.
- Bounkham Phonesavanh - 1 Year Old Toddler. Asian, presumably? Looked white. Not that his race actually matters for any reason. He was a BABY. An adorable little BABY. The police officer that threw a flash grenade into his crib--which exploded and burned the toddler's face off--was not indicted.
I have to stop there because if I can't leave off with "COP THROWS GRENADE AT ACTUAL BABY, WALKS AWAY SCOTT FREE" I don't know if I'll ever be able to stop.

okay suckahs give me yo games
0) I am opening myself up to suggestions of games to play. The more suggestions, the merrier. Suggest your stuff or someone else's. Just drop a link in the thread.
1) I'm only going to play games I feel like playing. I feel like playing VX Ace games more than VX games, VX games more than RM2k3 games, RM2k3 games more than RM2k games, RM2k games more than games made in other engines, and games made in other engines more than RMXP games, but I really might play any game regardless of what engine it's made in. I feel like playing RPGs more than non-RPGs but I am still happy to play non-RPGs if they look interesting. As for my actual tastes in games, all y'all should have a pretty good general idea of that by now.
2) I'm not going to play any games I don't feel like playing.
2.5) I don't promise I'm going to play ALL of anything. I'm trying to hit a lot of games here so if you hit me up with a 30 hour epic, I'm probably only going to play it for a couple hours max before I move on. If it's good I'll try to come back to it later.
3) I'm going to post reviews of the games I play. These reviews will be shorter than my usual reviews, but they won't be too short.
4) There is no limit on the number of requests I'll consider, subordinate to rules #1 and #2. So go nuts.
5) I am accepting requests from now until December 21st when requests will close
6) I am going to play these games in whatever order I feel like playing them in. I am not going to respond meaningfully to every game suggestion, certainly not with a 'yea' or 'nay'. As a rule, you will not know if I am going to play your game or not until I either play it or don't.
So at close of event, that's 11 requests fulfilled (10 if you don't count Space Dolphin) in a little over two weeks. Not bad.

[VX Ace] Quick Question
I vaguely remember there being a 'quick questions and answers' thread in Help Me! for questions that didn't deserve their own topic. Was that ever a thing?
Anyway, does anyone know the exact specific filesize that makes RPG Maker VX (ACE) shit the bed when you try to encrypt and compress a project? What I understand is something along the lines of, if there's an image that's too large, like x by y pixels or whatever, the program fucks up and throws an error when it's trying to encrypt/compress a game project. I just don't know what the file size cap actually is.
Obviously I'm not planning to include a lot of STUPID DUMB HUGE images in my game or anything. It's really only an issue for my IconSet file. Right now it's 384x4992 and I'm really feeling out of room for icons I need and I want to make it bigger. But I'm worried that an x or y dimension of 5000 pixels is the point where problems start cropping up.

Ludonarrative Dissonance In Simulationist Logic 01: Teleporting Items In RPGs
You ever notice when, in RPGs, the party of playable characters changes (like when you are inter-cutting between two groups of playable characters in different parts of the world map or on different planets, or when you are introducing new playable characters for the first time in a new location, or even when you are playing different characters in a flash-back or something) that when you open the Items menu, somehow inexplicably both parties of characters will illogically and impossibly have access to and use the exact same pool of items, with not even the most cursory in-game explanation for this impossible feat of hyperspatial nonsense?
This has been done in basically every RPG ever--I remember it driving me nuts in Final Fantasy VII as a kid--but my most recent brush with it has been in Xenosaga, where when the game firsts guts to Ziggy and then Junior, they have access to the exact same set of items that Shion and company have been collecting the whole game. Which makes no damn sense.
Two more questions.
a) Does this drive anyone else nuts with its sheer immersion-breaking illogic? Or is it just me? I ACCEPT the latter if that's the case. I am freaking WEIRD.
b) Can anyone think of any RPGs--professional or RPG Maker game, whatever--that averted this trope or confronted it or played with it or at least made a forth-wall breaking joke at its expense?

[VX ACE] How To Make Map Music Continue Smoothly Through Battles
Basically, I want to make it so that the on-map music continues to play continuously through battles that occur, rather than stop the map music, play battle music, play victory ME, and then play the map music again.
I need to be able to toggle it on and off in some fashion.
Does anyone know how to accomplish this?

[Poll] Accounting For Taste
Ok. I'll be honest. This is something I'm really struggling with on a personal level. But I think it's a struggle that is applicable to anyone who has ever made anything. And I think that there's potential for a good discussion here. I am not necessarily personally looking for advice. I just want to explore this topic.
General question to all serious developers of games:
At what point do the tastes of others (i.e. audience, fanbase, subscribers, random mean jerks on the internet) start to influence the artistic decisions you make in your game.
We'll start with something extremely simple and purely aesthetic before we get into thornier territory that involves actual meaningful design decisions.
Let's say that after much deliberation, you've chosen a battle music that you really like, even love. You enjoy listening to it during battles when you're playtesting your game, and you think it's perfectly fitting and appropriate to the game as well as awesome to listen to. Pure ear candy. Just thinking about it makes you in the mood to work on your game, and you really want it *in* your game because you think it fits your game perfectly.
How many people does it take telling you they absolutely fucking hate that battle music--like using hyperbole like that it "makes their ears bleed" or that hearing it made them want to quit the game immediately, some kind of intense negative reaction--before you actually change the battle music you love?
The last one is obviously the option I find the most fascinating from a meta-social and aesthetic point of view.
(Let's not quibble with "compromise" options like making the battle music random or selectable in an options menu. Because once you've done anything like that, you've already made a deviation from your personal taste. For our purposes, that's changing it.
Oh, and if you actually made the battle music yourself...that obviously adds a whole new dimension to the entire situation than a simple aesthetic choice. So by all means, you know, if you are a composer, even though this is just a hypothetical case--discuss.)

Chapsets - The Chapsettening
author=kentona
My biggest concern is that there are maybe 6 of us left who know them as chapsets...
THE GOAL OF THIS THREAD:
Get all of the great "classic rm2k3 chipsets" (i.e. various rips, Theodore, etcetera) UPSIZED AND REJIGGERED for VX Ace and collected and archived and hosted in one place for everyone to use in their games. Because honestly I feel like I STILL FIND MYSELF WANTING TO GO BACK TO THE OLD ARCHAIC BROKEDOWN-ASS 2K3 ENGINE TO BE ABLE TO USE CERTAIN GRAPHICS I LIKE, and that ain't right. That engine's a relic and I won't let some graphics pull me back to it.
The Plan: Man I have no fucking idea. But I want to share the booty with everyone and I will still probably even consider paying people to help with the project, even though it's not for me/at least not for any specific game.

Here are the Theo tiles I was using. However, I only resized the ones to practice making the bar with, and I'm not sure if there's enough room in Ace's A-E sheets to fit all the tiles that were in one 2k3-formatted chipset.

author=FF6 Rips by nemojbatkastle
Somewhat inspired by UPRC's Blackmoon Prophecy II, I've started my own project to import as many FF6 graphics as possible in to VXace. As usual, since I doubt I'll make any kind of real or concrete progress on it, I'm posting it all as I go.
***
I tried doing some pallette swaps on FF6 Tilesets, and they ended up looking pretty sweet. Since I doubt I'll ever do anything substantive with them, I figured I put them here. The idea is to make it so that the different sets will flow together more, and boy do they ever. This way you are able to make a town that combines the Doma tileset with South Figaro, or Vector, or so on.
Ever wondered why Vector was surrounded by a bottomless pit? Now you can put high castle walls around it! Looks cool with the Vector building, and the girders everywhere.
And this final one goes along with any number of rural towns in the game, and ended up giving the castle a very pretty bluish color. I never got around to doing the base layer here, so it stands as somewhat incomplete, but still usuable.
Anyways, you see what I'm getting at here, simple boring palette swaps and the endless quest to jam everything imaginable on to a tileset. It's pretty mind-breakingly tedious to map with these tiles, so it's probably best left to the professionals, but it can be done.

A note on these last...I don't actually remember EVER SEEING MOST OF THESE EVEN FOR RM2K3. So technically they stretch the scope of this project but I included them because they are awesome. Big ups to nemojbatkastle for all the work involved in these, especially all the awesome recolors.

Original Post Preserved For Posterity:
So, is there a way to convert RM2k3 Chipsets to VX (Ace) tilesets? I mean, obviously there is a way if you're willing to manually copy/paste, resize, re-align, re-grid, and redistribute everything by hand using image manipulation software i.e. GIMP, Paint.Net, etcetera to get every pixel right.
But, and not to sound like a lazy jerk (although I totally AM), that amount of effort is really prohibitive for some people, such as myself.
So what I'm really asking is, is there a way to do this that's partially or completely automated or at least reasonably easy? Like if I one day want to use theodore chipsets or something in VX (Ace), how difficult will that be? I know that I've seen this mentioned periodically here and there over the years, and I think I've seen a few people mention it being possible or even trivially easy, but I don't recall any specifics.
I am asking this publicly instead of privately because I feel like the answer or lack of answers may potentially be useful to a lot of people. It's called Part I because I am sure that there will be other things people can rectify my ignorance about in the future. Thanks.
